Description

Unakite, also known as Epidotized or Epidote Granite, is a very common type of Granite with Epidote, Pink Orthoclase, and Quartz inclusions. It’s name derives from the location it was discovered, the Unaka Mountains in western North Carolina, U.S. Unakite’s hardness and durability make it one of the easiest stones for beginners to tumble, as well as being a popular material for jewelers to cut into cabochons. In addition, this mineral can also be seen and used as decorative material within houses, museums, or specialty buildings. The most famous building known to have Unakite is the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. You can see it as trimming on the front steps right as you walk in or as floor tiles located at the south entrance. This mineral has multiple localities in the United States aside from North Carolina. Active and abundant veins are located in New Jersey and Virginia, with most of the “construction grade” material coming out of the latter locality. Other countries who host notable deposits of Unakite are China, Brazil, South Africa, and Sierra Leone.
